Mattarella forces Conte to tender his resignations

Mattarella stood his ground today and blackballed all attempts to promote Prof. Savona to the Ministry of the Economy. Conte rejected the mandate received from President Mattarella to form the so-called, “government of change”. With a major institutional crisis in the making, already there is talk of an improbable impeachment of Mr. Mattarella for overstepping his powers. With the Constitution vague on Presidential powers, it is unlikely that anyone will have the courage to actually promote impeachment in light of the gravity of the overall political situation. Mattarella has however let it be known that he intends to give Mr. Cottarelli a mandate to form a technical government. Cottarelli is well known in Washington circles for having worked 25 years at the IMF. He is an esteemed economist and graduate of The London School of Economics. Tomorrow we will know more and understand what may be in store for Italia. In the meantime expect the markets to begin unloading Italian Bonds. Moody’s has already threatened to downgrade the Country. Hold on to your hats as the Italian crisis deepens. To blame is a political system that ceased to function years ago, independently of the caliber of a leadership which seems unable to rise to the challenge.
